Three women received sentences of 10 to 13 years in prison today in France for belonging to the "Islamic State" (IS) group, Agence France-Presse reported, quoted by BTA.
Thirty-four-year-old Jennifer Klein was sentenced to 11 years in prison. Her 67-year-old mother-in-law Christine Alain was sentenced to 13 years in prison, with this sentence accompanied by a condition that two-thirds of the sentence must be served before possible parole. The third defendant, Christine Alain's other sister-in-law, Mayalen Dewar, 42, was sentenced to 10 years in prison with a suspended sentence.
Arriving in Syria with their children shortly after the declaration of the "caliphate" in June 2014, they initially refused to return to France and lived with a small group of IS women. They were eventually arrested in 2019 with their children and returned to France.
This morning, Jennifer Klein offered "sincere and profound" apologies to all "direct and indirect victims in France, Syria, Iraq and elsewhere" to the jihadists, as well as to her five children.
"I don't want to be forgiven, it's unforgivable, but I offer them my deepest and most sincere apologies", said the niece of the Klein brothers, who claimed responsibility for the November 13, 2015 attacks in France and are believed to have died in Syria.
"I am not a victim, the victims are others - those who were tortured and killed by the organization I belonged to: I am responsible", said Mayalene Dewar, before the court adjourned to deliberate on the sentences.
Dewar, who has been out on bail for two years, admitted that returning to prison would be a disaster for her children", who are in foster care. Through tears, she assured that she needed to "take care of them" so that they could recover and be able to welcome them home after the prosecution requested 10 years in prison for her.
Through tears, Jennifer Klein asked for forgiveness from her five children, who have also been placed in foster care since returning to France in 2019.
"I am sorry for everything they have experienced because of me [...], I failed in my role as a mother", said the woman, who is also on trial for abandonment of minors.
