Russian President Vladimir Putin said yesterday that US President Donald Trump's plan for the Gaza Strip could be a reason for optimism, Reuters reported, quoted by BTA.

"I think there may be light at the end of the tunnel", Putin said at the plenary session of the "Valdai" discussion club in the Russian resort city of Sochi.

Trump's plan envisages placing the Gaza Strip under international management.

The Russian leader described the situation in Gaza as a terrible event in the modern history of mankind, TASS reported.

He also said that even the "pro-Western" UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres said that "Gaza has become the world's largest children's cemetery".

"What could be more tragic and sad?", the Russian president asked rhetorically.

Putin said it was important that the plan for Gaza be approved by the Palestinians, including the Palestinian Islamist movement "Hamas", and by countries in the Islamic world.

Donald Trump's peace plan for the Gaza Strip "proposes the creation of an international body to govern Palestine, or more precisely, the Gaza Strip, for a period of time. "Mr. Blair is expected to be at the helm," Putin stressed.

Former British Prime Minister Tony Blair is not known as a peacemaker, but he is an experienced politician and can play a positive role in resolving the conflict in the Gaza Strip, TASS notes.

It is better for power in Gaza to be transferred to the Palestinian Authority, headed by Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas, the Russian head of state concluded.
