French President Emmanuel Macron is gathering the leaders of the political forces in France at the Elysee Palace this afternoon, but the leaders of the radical left and the far right have not been invited to the meeting, BFM TV reports, BTA reports.
The meeting is being organized at a time when Macron must find a suitable political figure for the role of prime minister. This will be the sixth prime minister of France during Macron's second presidential term.
The latest episode in the political crisis in France came after the prime minister-designate Sébastien Le Corneille resigned on Monday, just hours after presenting the composition of his government. He cited as a reason that there was no full support among the parties in the ruling coalition for the ministers he proposed and that some politicians were only thinking about their own ambitions.
Macron nevertheless tasked Le Corneille with holding two days of consultations with the political forces, during which a consensus was reached that the most urgent thing was to adopt the budget for next year at a time when France has a large budget deficit.
At the end of these consultations, Le Corneille said on Wednesday evening that Macron would probably nominate a new prime minister within 48 hours.
It is now believed that Macron could nominate a prime minister from the left, but that he could also nominate Le Corneille again.
