Former French President Nicolas Sarkozy has become the subject of death threats made to him by another prisoner in the "Sante" prison in Paris, the metropolitan prosecutor's office confirmed, BTA reported.
There, the former owner of the Elysee Palace began serving his sentence at the beginning of the week, handed down in a case for illegal financing of an election campaign. The state prosecution announced that an investigation has been opened into the case of the threats, Reuters reported.
"On October 22, 2025, the warden of the "Sante" prison "has informed the Paris prosecutor's office that a video apparently made by a prisoner is circulating on social media, in which he threatens Nicolas Sarkozy upon his arrival at the prison," the prosecutor's office said in a statement to Reuters.
Three prisoners were questioned in the investigation and two mobile phones were seized during a search of the prison, it added.
Sarkozy, who ruled France from 2007 to 2012, began serving a five-year sentence on Tuesday after being found guilty of a criminal conspiracy to raise funds for an election campaign by Colonel Muammar Gaddafi's regime in Libya. The former head of state has been assigned two police officers to guard him while he serves his sentence, a move that has angered prison guards' unions.
