Donald Trump announced that the peace agreement between Thailand and Cambodia will be signed in Malaysia immediately after his arrival in Kuala Lumpur today, reported Agence France-Presse, quoted by BTA.
Trump's visits, part of his first Asian tour since returning to the White House in January, coincide with the summit of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN).
Thai Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul, who is observing the mourning period in memory of Queen Mother Sirikit, announced his intention to travel to Malaysia and asked that the peace agreement be signed early this morning.
"To satisfy everyone for this important event, we will sign the peace agreement "as soon as I arrived," Trump said in a post on his "Truth Social" platform from aboard Air Force One. He expressed his condolences to the “great people of Thailand“.
The Republican president took part in the negotiations that led to a ceasefire between Bangkok and Phnom Penh.
In addition, the US head of state expressed his readiness to meet with North Korean leader Kim Jong-un during his Asian tour.
“If you want to spread the word, I am open to it“, he said yesterday.
On his way to Malaysia, Trump landed in the Qatari capital Doha, where he met aboard the “Air Force One” plane, as planned, with the Emir of Qatar - Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, and the Prime Minister of the Arab country - Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman al Thani, reported Agence France-Presse.
During the meeting, Trump welcomed Qatar's efforts for the negotiated ceasefire between Israel and the radical Palestinian group "Hamas" in the Gaza Strip based on his plan to end the two-year war in the enclave.
"What we have done together is incredible and they (the Qataris - ed.) are a significant factor in that", the president told reporters in the presence of the emir and the prime minister.
At the same time, he said he expected a "very good meeting" with Chinese leader Xi Jinping, and was optimistic about concluding a "comprehensive agreement" with China to avoid the entry into force on November 1 of the new, 100 percent tariffs on Chinese imports to the United States, AFP added.
Trump and Xi are due to meet next week in South Korea, on the sidelines of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) forum. This should be the culmination of the American head of state's Asian tour, Agence France-Presse points out.
"I think we have a really, really good chance of a comprehensive agreement", the Republican president said.
