Suicide bomber detonates car bomb in New Delhi. India puts on high alert VIDEOand tightens borders

The incident killed eight people and injured 24

A suicide bomber detonated a car bomb in New Delhi, near the historic Red Fort in the Indian capital, NDTV reported, citing its sources.

Eight people were killed and 24 were injured in yesterday's incident.

According to security camera footage, the car containing the explosives was parked near the scene of the incident for about three hours. The footage shows the driver appearing to be waiting for someone or instructions without getting out of the car.

According to sources, the explosion is being investigated as a terrorist attack. The Delhi Police invoked the provisions of the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act after forensic evidence and intelligence information pointed to possible links to terrorism. Preliminary investigations at the scene revealed the presence of ammonium nitrate.

The channel recalled that the explosion at the Red Fort in New Delhi occurred on the same day that police foiled a terrorist attack in the city of Faridabad in the state of Haryana, which borders Delhi, and arrested three suspects, with whom 350 kg of explosives were found.

A high alert was sounded in New Delhi after the incident, as well as in the neighboring state of Uttar Pradesh, the Indian metropolis of Mumbai, the states of Bihar, Kerala and several other states. Patrols have also been increased along India's borders with Pakistan and Bangladesh. Additional checks are being carried out at airports and railway stations in New Delhi, Chennai and other Indian cities.
