Ukraine's Prime Minister Orders Thorough Financial Audit of All Key State-Owned Companies Due to Corruption Scandal

Energy and Defense Companies in Focus of Inspectors

Ukrainian Prime Minister Yulia Sviridenko announced yesterday a "thorough financial audit" of all major state-owned companies amid a growing corruption scandal in the energy and defense sectors, DPA reported, quoted by BTA.

Companies in these two sectors will be subject to particularly strict inspections, Sviridenko announced on "Telegram".

The focus of attention will be on transparency in state procurement and financial control. Sviridenko specifically mentioned the energy company "Naftogaz" and the Ukrainian Railways company.

In a second publication, the prime minister said that the competition for the top position in the gas transmission system operator will also be suspended, since the name of one of the finalists is mentioned in the investigations of anti-corruption authorities.

"Under these circumstances, continuing the procedure is incompatible with the principles of transparency, integrity and trust in the process," Sviridenko noted.

Oksana Krivenko, who worked as an advisor to former Energy Minister and then Justice Minister German Galushchenko, has passed the pre-selection procedure for the position.

Galushchenko is one of two ministers who resigned amid what Ukrainian authorities say is a large-scale investigation into alleged bribery related to energy infrastructure projects.

The National Anti-Corruption Bureau of Ukraine (NABU) and the Specialized Anti-Corruption Prosecutor's Office (SAP) announced that they are investigating alleged bribes related to the state nuclear company "Energoatom".

The investigations focus on bribes worth millions allegedly paid for the construction of protective facilities designed to protect energy facilities from Russian air strikes.
