Orban: Military mafia is draining our money

Instead of demanding that we stop payments, Von der Leyen offers to send even more, Hungarian PM says

Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban has lashed out at European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen's "call" for a swift agreement on financing Ukraine's huge €135 billion budget gap for next year and 2027.

"It will now be crucial to quickly reach a clear commitment on how to ensure that the necessary funding for Ukraine is agreed at the next European Council meeting in December," Von der Leyen said.

Orban said he had received the letter in question calling for funding from Kiev.

"It says that Ukraine's financial deficit is significant and calls on member states to send more funds. It is amazing. At a time when it has become clear that a military mafia is draining European taxpayers' money, instead of demanding real control or stopping payments, the President of the Commission is proposing to send even more," the Hungarian Prime Minister wrote in X.

"This whole thing is a bit like trying to help an alcoholic by sending him another case of vodka. Hungary has not lost its sanity," he stressed.

The letter also lists three options for support: voluntary bilateral contributions from member states, joint debt at EU level, a reparations loan based on Russia's frozen assets.
