President Volodymyr Zelensky has denied Russian claims that Ukraine carried out a drone attack on one of President Vladimir Putin's residences and accused Moscow of trying to sabotage peace talks, the BBC reported.
Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said that Kiev carried out an overnight attack using 91 long-range drones on Putin's state residence in Russia's northwestern Novgorod region.
Russia said it would now reconsider its position in the peace talks. It is still unclear where Putin was during the alleged attack.
Zelensky dismissed the claim as “typical Russian lies“ intended to give the Kremlin an excuse to continue its attacks on Ukraine.
He said Russia had previously attacked government buildings in Kiev.
Zelensky added in X: “It is extremely important that the world does not remain silent now. We cannot allow Russia to undermine the work of achieving lasting peace.
In a statement shared on Telegram on Monday, Lavrov said that all 91 drones he claimed were launched at Putin's residence were intercepted and destroyed by Russian air defense systems.
He added that there were no reports of casualties or damage as a result of the attack.
“Given the final degeneration of the criminal regime in Kiev, which has switched to a policy of state terrorism, Russia's position in the negotiations will be reviewed,“ he said.
But he added that Russia had no intention of walking away from the negotiation process with the United States, the Russian news agency TASS reported.
Moscow's claim came after talks between the United States and Ukraine in Florida on Sunday, where Presidents Trump and Zelensky discussed a revised peace plan to end the war.
Zelensky said the US had offered Ukraine security guarantees for 15 years, and Trump said an agreement on the issue was “close to 95%“ reached.
The Ukrainian leader identified territorial issues and the Russian-occupied Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant as the last outstanding issues, and there were few signs of progress on the future of Ukraine's disputed Donbas region, which Russia wants to take over entirely.
Moscow currently controls about 75% of Donetsk Oblast and about 99% of neighboring Luhansk. The two regions are collectively known as Donbass.
Russia has already rejected key parts of the plan under discussion.
