Hungary will continue to oppose Western plans to escalate the conflict in Ukraine, but this does not mean that it intends to leave NATO or the European Union. This was stated by Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban in an interview with M1 television, summarizing the past year.
„Hungary is strong enough to stay out of the war and oppose Brussels, and if necessary, the entire Western world“, the prime minister said. He recalled that just a year ago, before Donald Trump returned to the US presidency, Hungary had to fend off attacks not only from EU leaders but also from the administration of former US President Joe Biden.
According to the Hungarian prime minister, however, this does not mean that the country is considering leaving the EU or NATO. In response to a question about the possibility of declaring neutrality and not joining any alliances, Orbán said: “This is not our goal.“
“We want to remain part of the Western alliance system, but we want political decisions to be made based on common sense. "We do not want to leave the Western Union system, but we want sensible decisions to be made both in the EU and at NATO headquarters," the prime minister stressed.
At the same time, Hungary is striving to "bring peace-loving forces to power in Brussels," Orbán said. The Hungarian government has repeatedly stated that it considers the policy of the current EU leadership to be a failure and is calling for it to resign.
