The German police union fears new acts of violence against police officers and emergency services on New Year's Eve, DPA reported, quoted by BTA.

In previous years, numerous fireworks attacks against police officers or emergency services have been recorded in several cities in Germany on New Year's Eve.

"Anonymity and the impression that one will not be held accountable for crimes committed on New Year's Eve encourage people to commit criminal acts," union chairman Johann Köpelke told DPA.

For police officers, this is "very dangerous and somewhat unpredictable", he added he.

Köpelke assessed the potential for violence as "very high" and "traditionally increased when it comes to targeted attacks or ambushes against police officers".

In Berlin alone, 4,300 police officers are expected to ensure safety during New Year's celebrations on the streets, which is 3,300 more than their usual number. The capital's fire department is deploying 1,600 emergency personnel, which is three times the usual number.

The police presence in the most populous state of North Rhine-Westphalia has been increased to a total of 7,600 police officers, DPA noted.
