Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said today that he expects Russia to implement the agreement not to carry out strikes on Kiev and other Ukrainian cities for a week due to the winter cold. The agreement was announced earlier today by US President Donald Trump, Reuters reported, BTA reported.

"An important statement by President Trump on the possibility of ensuring the safety of Kiev and other Ukrainian cities during this extreme winter period", Zelensky noted, quoted by the Ukrinform agency.

The Ukrainian president stressed the importance of energy for the lives of Ukrainians and thanked partners for their support.

"Electricity supply is the basis of life. We appreciate the efforts of our partners to help us protect people's lives. Thank you, President Trump! ”Zelensky said.

"Our teams discussed this issue in the United Arab Emirates. We expect the agreement to be implemented," Zelensky wrote in English on the social network "Ex".

"The steps to de-escalate contribute to real progress towards ending the war", he added.

US President Donald Trump announced today that his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin had agreed, at his request, that Russia not carry out strikes in Ukraine on the capital Kiev and other cities, Reuters and Agence France-Presse reported.

Speaking at a meeting of his cabinet, Trump explained that he had asked Putin to do so because of the "record cold".

The temperature in Kiev is below zero, and a cold wave is expected next week, as a result of which thermometers in the Ukrainian capital will record minimum values of about minus 20 degrees Celsius for several days.

The US president announced great progress in the trilateral peace talks involving both sides in the conflict and the United States.

Trump's special envoy Steve Witkoff meanwhile announced that these talks would continue in about a week.

The first round took place in Abu Dhabi on Friday and Saturday.

Witkoff said that the issues of future guarantees for Ukraine's security and prosperity had largely been settled. The parties were continuing to negotiate the territories, he added.

The main stumbling block in the talks is Moscow's demand that the Ukrainian army withdraw from the part of Donbas that the Russian army has not captured.

So far, there has been no reaction from Russia, nor is it clear when this pause in strikes will begin, DPA notes.
