Cuba is talking to the United States, Cuban diplomat Carlos Fernandez de Cosio told Reuters yesterday.

De Cosio, who is the deputy foreign minister, explained that the talks have not yet evolved into a formal dialogue.

The Cuban diplomat said that the US government knows that Cuba is ready for a serious, meaningful and responsible dialogue.

"We exchange messages, we have embassies, we communicate", but we cannot say that the dialogue is formal, De Cosio said in an interview with Reuters given at the Cuban Foreign Ministry building in Havana.

Yesterday's statements by De Cosio were the first hint from Cuba that there is a conversation between the two countries, albeit limited, following heightened tensions between them over the United States' capture of Venezuelan leader Nicolas Maduro.

US President Donald Trump said on Sunday that the US had begun talks with the highest-ranking people in Cuba.

"I think we're going to make a deal with Cuba," Trump told reporters on Sunday.
