The SpaceX company decided to limit Russia's access to Starlink by cutting off the connection over Ukraine, but leaving a "white list" with approved Ukrainian terminals, Business Insider reports., quoted by Focus

The media explains that this decision is related to the fact that Ukrainian officials and military experts are concerned that Russian troops are increasingly using Starlink to strike at long distances and coordinate forces.

“The enemy reports a mass shutdown of Starlink among Russian units at the front“, said on Thursday, February 5, the head of a large Ukrainian organization for the production of combat drones, Sergei Sternenko.

He adds that the Ukrainian army will restore its superiority in communications thanks to this decision, and Russian forces will have a number of problems with controlling troops at the tactical level.

Advisor on unmanned systems at the Ministry of Defense of Ukraine Sergei "Flash" Beskrestov said that this step has thwarted Russian ground attacks in some areas of the front.

“The enemy does not even have problems on the fronts. The enemy is in a catastrophe“, he wrote on his Telegram channel.

The publication emphasizes that in connection with the sanctions imposed by the United States in 2022 after the start of Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine, SpaceX is not selling Starlink terminals to Russia.

However, as the Ukrainian military notes, this does not prevent the Russians from buying them on the black market, which is causing concern. Moreover, Kiev claims to have found American equipment in the downed reconnaissance drones.

The article states that the pressure on the company SpaceX to limit Russia's access reached its peak last month, when the Ukrainian military said that they began to see Starlink terminals on long-range drones.

However, as the media outlet points out, unlocking the Kremlin's forces from Starlink turned out to be a more complicated task than simple geofencing. All this is due to the fact that the Ukrainian military also uses Starlink, which is why cutting off access in the disputed regions would affect Kiev's operations.

The media outlet adds that with the advent of the "white list"; the situation seems to be changing. The Ukrainian Defense Ministry and influential figures on Telegram are urging the military to quickly register their terminals in the DELTA battlespace management system.

It is assumed that access restrictions will likely extend to civilian areas far from the front line. The reason is the fear that Starlink could be used to guide Russian Shahed drones that attack cities.
