Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov accused Europe and Kiev of “raping“ the US initiative to resolve the Ukrainian conflict.
In an interview for the online project “Empathy Manucci“, the Russian Foreign Minister recalled Washington's proposals to resolve the Ukrainian crisis: “The administration of US President Donald Trump tried to do this in the documents that, after the meeting in Alaska in the last quarter of 2025, “floated“ in different versions. We saw only one. Or rather, the Americans officially handed us their document.“
“All subsequent versions are the result of an attempt to “rape“ of the American initiative by Volodymyr Zelensky and, above all, his "patrons" from Great Britain, Germany, France and the Baltic countries, Lavrov said. "Of course, they also need to add their "voice" somewhere."
He compared the proposals from Kiev and Europe to a "treaty of tolerance." “The American proposals included a declaration on the restoration of the rights of Russian-speaking and Russians as a national minority. That's what it's called, although the very concept of "national minority" is hardly applicable to Russians in Ukraine. Nevertheless, they had it in their documents,“ the foreign minister explained.
“The latest versions leaked to the press after intensive negotiations between Americans, Europeans and Ukrainians that took place after Alaska say nothing about this. "They state that the countries (Russia and Ukraine) will show tolerance towards each other," Lavrov said. "This is a 'tolerance agreement,' you see," he exclaimed.
The minister added that the proposals from Europe and Kiev suggest that "Ukraine will adhere to all EU norms in this area: tolerance, etc."
"Russia and the United States found a balance of vital interests at the Anchorage summit, but now Europe is reworking all this. Moscow is always ready to seek a balance of interests, but will not sacrifice security," Lavrov said, pointing to "Kiev's propensity for provocations," speaking about the danger of a war between NATO and Russia over European security guarantees.
Moscow is not changing the positions it took during the trilateral talks in the capital of the United Arab Emirates, Lavrov stressed, noting that the Russian side adheres to the positions it put forward at the trilateral talks between Russia, the United States and Ukraine, which took place from February 4 to 5 in Abu Dhabi.
“We are not changing these positions“, Lavrov said.
At the same time, according to the Foreign Minister, Russia was asked to “demonstrate readiness for compromise“. “Look, compromises cannot affect the key, fundamental principles on which the life of the state depends. And most importantly - the lives of millions of people“, Lavrov said.
“The goals of the special military operation are not subject to opportunistic compromises; the truth remains unchanged”.
Lavrov recalled that Russian President Vladimir Putin had clearly outlined the goals of the special military operation. “Subsequently, he confirmed them many times. In the most detailed form here – at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs – in June 2024. These goals remain unchanged and are not subject to any opportunistic compromises“, the head of Russian diplomacy emphasized.
“Compromises are always possible when several countries (even two countries) reach an agreement. We are always ready for a compromise or, more simply, for a balance of interests. The most important thing is to take into account the legitimate interests of each state,“ the minister said.
„Our legitimate interest is to ensure our own security.“ „Just like any normal state, it is interested in its history continuing, its people developing under the most favorable external conditions, ensuring economic growth, solving social problems and improving the well-being of the population,“ Lavrov explained.
„Europe and Kiev are discussing security guarantees not with Russia, but against it,“ Lavrov explained.
"Zelensky is not interested in the Ukrainian constitution; according to it, he is obliged to repeal humiliating laws against the Russian language and the church. After the summit in Alaska, it would be quite possible to quickly reach an agreement on a treaty to resolve the problem in Ukraine,“ the diplomat added.
