Spain has asked the European Union to lift sanctions against Venezuela's interim president Delcy Rodriguez. The call comes after the Caracas authorities' decision to grant amnesty to political prisoners.

According to Spanish Foreign Minister José Manuel Álvarez, sanctions are never an end in themselves, but a means to an end, in order to achieve a broad, peaceful and democratic dialogue in Venezuela. "If steps are taken in this direction, the European Union must also take them", said Madrid's top diplomat, recalling that former Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro was not subject to sanctions by the European Union.

"The Spanish government encourages Delcy Rodríguez to continue taking steps in this direction, so that conditions are created for those who are outside Venezuela, those who wish to return, to do so", Albarez also said.

The day before, the Venezuelan National Assembly unanimously approved an amnesty law for political prisoners sentenced between 2002 and 2025, but it excludes individuals who have encouraged or participated in armed or violent actions.
