Two thousand soldiers from the Mexican Ministry of National Defense have arrived in the state of Jalisco to provide security after the unrest that erupted after the killing of the leader of the “New Generation“ cartel in Jalisco.
This was announced by Pablo Lemus, governor of the region, during a briefing by the state government. A video clip of the speech was posted on his Facebook page.
“Two thousand soldiers from the Ministry of National Defense have arrived to patrol the streets of Jalisco. These officers have already begun their duties,“ Lemus noted. He added that state authorities continue to gradually restore normal life in the region and finally open roads to traffic. Public transport is expected to be fully operational on February 24.
The governor reiterated that, given the current situation, all public events in the state have been canceled until further notice, and in-person classes in educational institutions have been suspended. He stressed that state authorities have the full support of the federal government.
On February 22, the Mexican Ministry of National Defense announced the elimination of Rubén Oseguera Cervantes, also known as El Mencho, leader of the “New Generation Jalisco“ drug cartel. According to the ministry, he was seriously injured during an armed clash with security forces near the city of Tapalpa in the state of Jalisco and died on the way to the hospital.
After the special operation, highway blockades, car burnings and businesses began across the country. President Claudia Sheinbaum announced that by February 23, the public security situation in the country was completely under control.
