After Russian strikes on the Druzhba oil pipeline on 27 January disrupted crude oil supplies to Hungary and Slovakia, the European Commission and the European Council took immediate action to restore supplies. In a joint statement, Presidents Ursula von der Leyen and Antonio Costa stressed that the EU had discussed the situation with Ukraine and the countries affected in order to ensure the continued flow of oil to Budapest and Bratislava, BTA reports.

The EU offered Ukraine technical assistance and financial resources, which the Ukrainian side accepted and assessed positively. European experts are ready to provide support immediately, the document notes.

The main objective of these measures is to ensure energy security for all European citizens. The Commission will continue to work with its partners to open additional routes for the supply of non-Russian crude oil to the countries of Central and Eastern Europe.
