Iran directed more than 200 drones and missiles against Israel, reported Israeli army spokesman Daniel Hagari, quoted by Reuters and BTA.
He said many of them had been intercepted before they even reached Israeli territory, but added that the attack was continuing. Several dozen Iranian surface-to-surface missiles hit Israel, wounding a 10-year-old girl in the area of the city of Arad in the Negev desert and causing minor damage to a military site in the south of the country.
Iran's state news agency IRNA said there was "serious damage to the largest air base in the Negev".
At the same time, Iran's allies - the fighters of the Lebanese group "Hezbollah" and the Yemeni Houthi rebels - carried out attacks against Israel, with the former firing rockets at the Israeli-occupied Golan Heights, and the latter launching drones into Israeli territory.
Explosions were heard in the sky above Jerusalem, AFP journalists from the scene reported. Air raid sirens sounded in several more Israeli cities.
