British Foreign Secretary David Cameron expressed hope that Israel's response to the Iranian missile and drone attack on the night of April 14 will be "as firm as it is smart", DPA reported, quoted by BTA.

The former British prime minister made his statement after crisis diplomacy talks that he and German Foreign Minister Analene Berbock held in Israel before participating in the G-7 summit on the island of Capri in Italy.

Cameron said that the more important issues were the release of Israeli hostages held in the Gaza Strip by the radical Palestinian group "Hamas", the regular delivery of humanitarian aid to Palestinians in the coastal territory and the ceasefire there.

After meetings with Israeli President Yitzhak Herzog and Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, Cameron and Berbock issued a general appeal for restraint. "I am talking about a pure show of restraint, which is actually a show of strength", Berbock said.

"I thank our friends for their support - in words and in deeds. They have given a number of suggestions and advice, which I appreciate, but I would like to make one thing clear - we will make the decisions ourselves. The State of Israel will do whatever is necessary to defend itself,", Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu said.

"An escalation of tensions will not benefit anyone,", Berbock noted in turn.
