The Portuguese government has refused to start a process to pay reparations for its colonial past and slavery, for which called on Friday the president of the country Marcelo Ribello di Sousa.

The government statement cited by the agency said there was no concrete action plan to pay compensation. It is emphasized that the government wants “deepening of relations, respect for historical truth and increasingly intensive and close cooperation based on the reconciliation of fraternal nations”. It is also noted that the prime minister considers the relations with the former colonies to be “really wonderful” and notes cooperation in the fields of education, language, culture, health and economy.

The process of mass liberation of the peoples of Africa from colonialism began in the 1960s. The Portuguese colonial empire at various times included Angola, Brazil, East Timor, Cape Verde and Mozambique, as well as parts of India.
