Eight people dead and 21 missing as a result of torrential rains this week in the southern Brazilian state of Rio Grande do Sul , reported the civil protection service, reported Reuters, quoted by BTA.

Authorities reported more than 1,400 people displaced as a result of the storms, which led to rising river levels and flooding in various parts of the state, affecting 104 municipalities.

In a report on the hydrological situation yesterday, the state government predicted a risk of flooding "virtually across the entire state" given the prospect of continued "torrential rainfall" in the coming days.

The bulletin also states that flooding will be severe along many rivers, with flash flooding and massive landslides possible in areas with steep slopes.

The governor of the state, Eduardo Leyte, expressed his condolences for the deaths caused by the storms on the X social network, adding that the government is working to locate the missing people and ensure safety in the at-risk areas.
