At least 11 people were killed in shelling on refugee camps in DR Congo

26 were seriously injured

At least eleven people were killed and twenty-six others were seriously injured in shelling on four refugee camps in Democratic Republic of Congo, DPA reported, quoted by BTA.

The agency was informed by the manager of Lushagala, Elohim, Rego and Sepak camps in Mugunga district, not far from the eastern city of Goma, Moise Ngayabarenzi.

A spokesman for the Congolese armed forces in North Kivu province said fighters from the M23 rebel group opened fire on people in the refugee camps after the army destroyed their weapons and ammunition cache this morning. M23 rejects the accusations.

Ngayabarenzi also says that after the shooting by the insurgents, people inhabiting the camps rioted and barricaded the streets. The army intervened to restore order, but at that time a child and his mother were shot dead.

DPA recalls that since December, fighting between M23 rebels and the Congolese government has forced more than 250,000 people to flee their homes in search of salvation.
