The death toll from heavy flooding in the southern Brazilian state of Rio Grande do Sul has reached 136, the Brazilian civil defense said today, quoted by Reuters and BTA.

The agency notes that another 125 people remain unaccounted for.

Storms and flooding in Brazil's southernmost state have displaced nearly 537,000 people, according to civil protection figures.

Nearly 446 settlements and about 2.1 million people are affected in the state with a population of nearly 10.9 million.

Meteorological office "Metsul" reported that after a brief lull, the rains that lashed the state on Friday had once again started to fill rivers and create a "critical" situation.
