Tbilisi adopts the controversial bill on "foreign agents"

Prime Minister Kobakhidze said that the parliament will act according to the will of the majority of the country's population

Georgian Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze said that the parliament in Tbilisi will adopt the controversial bill on " the ;foreign agents" despite the many thousands of protests in recent weeks. The final third reading of the bill is scheduled for today, May 14, reports Reuters, quoted by BNR.

In a televised address, the prime minister stated that the parliament will act according to the will of the majority of the country's population and adopt the law in the third reading.

At the same time, students in the capital Tbilisi organized a new protest march to the parliament against the bill, called the "Russian law" because of its similarity to Moscow's repressive legislation.

Kobahidze warned that if the authorities gave way, Georgia would lose sovereignty and "easily share the fate of Ukraine", but without specifying what he meant.

The controversial bill was passed today at a one-minute meeting of the legal committee of the Georgian parliament despite a boycott by opposition parties.

A total of 20 people were detained during the protests, which gathered several thousand demonstrators last night, and among those arrested were two Americans and a Russian. According to the protesters, the bill diverts Georgia from the path to joining the European Union.
