Russian draft resolution on nuclear weapons in space fails at UN Security Council

15-member top body splits in vote

Russian-drafted UN Security Council resolution calling on all parties to prevent "forever" the deployment, threat or use of weapons in outer space failed, with the 15-member top UN body split on the vote, Reuters reported, quoted by BTA.

The project failed to gather the required minimum nine votes - seven members voted in favor of the project, seven - against, and one abstained. A veto can only be imposed by the US, Russia, China, Britain or France if the project receives at least nine votes.

Russia submitted the text after vetoing a US-drafted draft last month that called on countries to prevent an arms race in outer space. The Russian veto made the US wonder if Moscow was hiding something.
