The European commission made it clear that Hungary had no choice but to pay the hefty fine imposed by the Court of Justice of the EU. This penalty comes as a result of Hungary's failure to adhere to EU migration and asylum regulations. The Commission is now seeking an answer from Budapest on how it plans to implement the court's decision and is ready to decide on further actions based on Hungary's response, BTA reports.

The Commission spokesperson outlined the steps Hungary needs to take to remedy the situation. Hungary will initially receive a written request to explain its action plan. The European Commission will then set a timetable for fulfilling Hungary's obligations, including the payment of the fine. In case Hungary delays its payment, the Commission has a structured follow-up plan.

After the initial 45 day payment period, a reminder will be issued giving an additional 15 days to pay. Failure to comply even after this extension will result in the European Commission deducting the amount due directly from EU funds granted to Hungary.

Today is the countdown for Hungary to act on the court's decision. The spokesman stressed the importance of the immediate payment of the €200 million fine.

The European Commission will closely monitor the situation and assess Hungary's compliance with the court's ruling from this point forward.
