A 67-year-old German has been found dead on the Greek island of Crete, Reuters reports. This is the sixth tourist death in June during a period of unusually hot weather in the country, quoted by News.bg.
He went hiking alone in a canyon in the Sougia area yesterday and called his wife a few hours later to say he was feeling unwell.
"A search and rescue operation was launched immediately and a special rescue team with drones spotted the man's body in the Tripiti canyon," police said.
The identity of the deceased German man has not been released.
There has been a spate of deaths and disappearances of tourists during the unusual heatwave in June in the Mediterranean country, highlighting the dangers of exposure to temperatures exceeding 40°C.
Rescue teams are also searching for two French women, aged 73 and 64 on the island of Sikinos and a 59-year-old American police officer on holiday on the island Amorgos.
Last week, a 55-year-old American man was found dead on the Greek island of Matraki in the Ionian Sea, and a Dutch tourist died on the Aegean island of Samos earlier this month.
On June 9, the body of British TV presenter Michael Mosley was found on Symi, another island in the Aegean Sea, after a four-day search operation involving planes, drones and boats. He had been walking alone in the scorching heat before he disappeared.
