First meeting: Britain's new foreign secretary talks to his German counterpart Berbock

David Lammy makes debut visit to Berlin

The new British foreign secretary David Lammy met his German counterpart Analena Berbock in Berlin yesterday, just a day after taking office, DPA reported, quoted by BTA.

Berbock called the UK an "indispensable part of Europe", the agency notes.

"Whether it is about science, culture or defense, /.../ we work closely together", the German foreign minister wrote in a post on the social platform "X".

"Together with the new British government, we are exploring the possibility of bringing Britain closer to the EU again," Berbock added. Even before taking office, Lammy rejected the possibility that the United Kingdom would once again become part of the EU or the customs union, DPA recalls.

He was appointed foreign minister on Friday after his Labor Party's landslide victory a day earlier in snap parliamentary elections. Along with his inauguration, Lammy announced that he intended to visit several allied countries, including Germany.

New British Prime Minister Keir Starmer wants to conclude a broad defense agreement with the EU, including other areas such as energy and climate.

The meeting also discussed "how the two countries can help Ukraine more effectively together with their allies,", adds DPA, indicating that this was in the context of the NATO summit starting on Tuesday in the American capital Washington.
