The Russian Defense Ministry said its forces had taken control over the village of Yasnobrodovka in the Donetsk region, eastern Ukraine, reported Reuters, quoted by TASS, referring to a message from the department in the "Telegram" application.
"As a result of active actions, the divisions of troop group "Center" liberated the settlement of Yasnobrodovka in the Donetsk People's Republic and improved their tactical positions," the ministry said, as quoted by TASS.
Ukraine has not confirmed such a loss and noted that the village is one of several where its forces are defending their positions, Reuters points out.
The Ukrainian General Staff said the village was one of nine in the Pokrovsky sector of Donetsk region, west of the Russian-controlled city of Donetsk, where Ukrainian forces have held off more than 20 Russian offensive attempts in the past 24 hours.
The statement from the headquarters says that the Pokrovsky sector saw the most clashes along the 1,000-kilometer front line.
Reuters notes that it cannot independently verify information about the fighting on either side.
The Russian military says it has captured a number of villages in its slow advance through Ukraine's Donetsk region after capturing the key town of Avdeyevka in February.
The popular Ukrainian military blog DeepState did not mention Yasnobrodovka in its frontline summary, but reported heavy fighting in the surrounding areas. He points out that Russian forces are trying to gain control of two villages further north. "Today is another tough day in the area," said the blog post.
