Catania airport shut down due to Etna eruption

On July 5, Catania airport also shut down when an ash cloud up to 5 km high rose from Mount Etna.

The operator of the airport near the Sicilian city of Catania announced the suspension of all flights due to the activity of Etna, accompanied by an eruption of ash, reports Focus.

The airport plans to resume operations as soon as the ash stops falling and the runways are cleared.

Flights departing or arriving during the enforced pause in airport operations will be canceled or diverted to other airports; passengers will need to check with their airlines for information.

On July 5, Catania airport also stopped operations when an ash cloud up to 5 km high rose from Mount Etna.

In the same days, a large cloud of ash rose from the volcano on the nearby island of Stromboli.
