Italy urgently raised fighter jets "Typhoon" to intercept a military plane flying over the Baltic Sea, the Ministry of Defense in Rome announced, quoted by Reuters, writes BTA.
The Italian fighter jets took off from the air base in the northern Lithuanian city of Šiauliai on orders from the NATO monitoring center in Germany.
The statement from the military department did not release details about the intercepted aircraft.
Baltic countries Lithuania, Latvia and Estonia are members of NATO and have a highly critical attitude towards Russia because of its invasion of Ukraine.
Italy this month led the alliance's mission to protect the airspace over the Baltic Sea.
