4.6-magnitude quake near Los Angeles

A 4.6-magnitude earthquake shook the Los Angeles area shortly after noon local time, the US Geophysical Institute reported, cited by the Associated Press and BTA.

The shock was felt strongly by local residents. The epicenter of the earthquake was in the "Highland Park" district, northeast of the city center, and its epicenter was at a depth of 12.1 km, according to Reuters.

The Los Angeles Fire Department said it was called in to respond, but there were no reports of property damage or injuries as a result of the quake.

The National Weather Service said no tsunami is expected.

An earthquake with a magnitude of 4.8 shook Syria and Jordan late last night, the German Research Center for Geophysics reported, cited by Reuters and BTA.

Residents of both countries, as well as of Lebanon, felt the tremor.

The focus of the earthquake was at a depth of 10 km, the center announced.

The Syrian state telegraph agency SANA reported that the epicenter of the earthquake was registered near the Syrian city of Hama.

So far, there are no reports of casualties or damage, according to Reuters.
