A woman who was seriously injured in an explosion early this morning in the center of Thessaloniki has died from her injuries, reported the newspaper "Kathimerini", quoted by BTA.

The explosion occurred in a parking lot next to a bank branch, at the intersection of Platonos and Agios Dimitriou streets, at around 6 am. The woman was rushed to the “Ippokratio“ hospital, but eventually died from her injuries.

In an interview with the Greek TV channel “Sky”, police spokeswoman Constantia Dimoglidou said that investigators are working to determine whether the victim was a bystander or was somehow connected to the incident.

She noted that the woman was known to police, including through her involvement in robberies.

According to police sources, investigators suspect that the device may have exploded in her hands before she could insert it into an ATM. Police have audiovisual materials that support this scenario.

The “Organized Crime“ Directorate has taken over the investigation, and the surrounding area remains cordoned off.

The powerful explosion caused significant damage to the parking lot, nearby business buildings, homes and numerous vehicles.
