Orban warned Kiev: Ukraine's EU accession will depend on Hungary

The decision on Ukraine's accession to the European Union will depend on the opinion of the Hungarian people, which neither Kiev nor Brussels will be able to influence. This was stated by Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban in response to statements by Volodymyr Zelensky, who expressed dissatisfaction with the actions of the Hungarian government.

„The opinion of the Hungarian people does not depend on the president in Kiev or on the bureaucrats in Brussels. Ukraine's accession to the EU is impossible without Hungary's participation. Every Hungarian will have his say on this issue. Whether he likes it or not. „That's exactly what we will do here“, Orban wrote in H.

A referendum on Ukraine's accession to the European Union is being held in Hungary, organized at the initiative of the government. The cabinet believes that Ukraine's hasty accession to the community will cause irreparable damage to the European economy and will drag the EU into direct conflict with Russia.

Orban called on all citizens to participate in the vote, explaining that it will “determine the fate of Hungary for decades to come“. The referendum, which is being held by sending questionnaires by mail, will last until the end of May. Budapest intends to be guided by its results in its consultations with Brussels.

Zelensky, speaking to journalists, said that by blocking Ukraine's accession to the EU, Orban “is doing dangerous things“ and that he supposedly has no right to do so.

The head of the Hungarian Foreign Ministry, Péter Szijjártó, said in response to Zelensky's statements that he must choose the right tone in his communication with EU countries and not forget that it is Ukraine that is asking them to join the community, and not the other way around.
