At least ten people were killed and 48 injured in the village of Poonch in the Indian part of Kashmir (in the Indian state of Jammu and Kashmir) in an exchange of artillery fire between India and Pakistan along their border in the disputed Himalayan region, Agence France-Presse reported, citing a local official and police authorities.

Three Indian Air Force planes crashed in Indian territory for reasons not yet specified during fighting between the two countries, an Indian security source said. The wreckage of two of the planes was found in Indian-held Kashmir and the third in the northwestern Indian state of Punjab, a source told AFP, without giving details about the pilots.

Meanwhile, the death toll from Indian strikes on Pakistan has risen to 26, with 46 injured, the Pakistani military said, adding that India had also attacked several dams.

India launched a missile attack on Pakistan overnight, saying it was targeting nine sites that were terrorist. Earlier in the day, Pakistani forces said there had been 24 strikes and that six were on civilian targets, killing eight and wounding 35. The strikes were carried out in 24 locations in Pakistan, using a variety of weapons, Pakistani army spokesman Ahmed Chaudhry said, AFP and Reuters reported.

Pakistan closed schools and declared a state of emergency after the Indian strikes. The measure is in effect for Pakistan's most populous province of Punjab, home to nearly 130 million people.

The strikes hit civilian targets in Punjab and the Pakistani part of Kashmir, Pakistani officials said.

Pakistan closed its airspace for 48 hours after the Indian strikes. Airport operations in Islamabad and Lahore were suspended until further notice.

India canceled all flights to and from a number of airports, including Jammu, Srinagar, Amritsar, Jamnagar, Jodhpur, and others, until noon local time today. Two international flights bound for Amritsar were diverted to Delhi.

A Pakistani military spokesman said they had shot down five Indian fighter jets, listing them as three Rafales, one Su-30 and one MiG-29, Reuters reported.

Tensions between India and Pakistan escalated when 26 tourists were killed in late April in the Indian part of Kashmir, with Delhi blaming Pakistan, which it denied. The two countries have imposed sanctions and restrictions on each other.
