The Constitutional Court of Romania has rejected the appeal of the leader of the far-right party “Alliance for the Unification of Romanians“ (AUR) Gheorghe Simion, with which he requested the annulment of the results of the second round of the presidential election. This was reported by the national agency Agerpres, BTA reports.

Simion lost the runoff held on May 18, 2025, to the independent candidate and current mayor of Bucharest Nikusor Dan.

“At its meeting on May 22, 2025, the Constitutional Court – within its powers – examined the request to annul the results of the second round of the presidential election, filed by Mr. Gheorghe-Nicolae Simion. After deliberations, the court unanimously rejected the request as unfounded. The decision is final“, said a statement from the Central Electoral Bureau of Romania.

The appeal was filed the day before the decision and in it Simion challenged the legitimacy of the elections, citing alleged “external interference“ in the electoral process.

This month's presidential vote was repeated after the previous election - held in November 2024 - was annulled by the Constitutional Court due to suspicions of Russian interference in favor of the then favorite, the far-right independent candidate Calin Georgescu. The court ordered the entire election process to start over.

In the rerun held on Sunday, independent candidate Nikushor Dan won with 53.60% of the vote. Gheorghe Simion received the support of 46.40% of voters.
