German Chancellor Friedrich Merz said today that he had received information according to which one of the two murdered employees of the Israeli embassy in Washington is likely a German citizen, Reuters reported, quoted by BTA.
A man and a woman were killed in the attack. According to DPA, the man held a German passport. According to the Association of the German-Israeli Community in Berlin, he spent part of his childhood in the southern state of Bavaria and was fluent in German.
The man was one of the founders of a youth forum, the aim of which was to promote exchange and cooperation between young people from Germany and Israel. In 2022 has started working at the Israeli embassy in Washington.
He and the woman, also an embassy employee, were shot dead near the Jewish Museum in the US capital. Israeli officials said the two were a young couple who had planned to get engaged.
Police have detained a suspect in the attack, who chanted “Freedom for Palestine“ during his arrest.
