Washington has lifted sanctions imposed in 2019 against Syria for 180 days

The measure is expected to improve sanitation, electricity and water supply in the Arab Republic

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio has signed documents to lift the package of sanctions imposed on Syria in 2019, the State Department announced.

These are sanctions adopted under the so-called “Caesar“ Act. This move will contribute to improving sanitation, electricity and water supply.

“Today's actions represent the first step in realizing President Trump's vision for a new relationship between Syria and the United States. It gives the Syrian government a chance to promote peace and stability both in Syria and in its relations with its neighbors,“ Rubio said.

“The President made clear his expectation that the assistance will be followed by swift action by the Syrian government on important policy priorities“, the US Secretary of State concluded.

On Friday, the US Treasury Departmentissued a general license, formally authorizing previously prohibited operations in Syria.

On May 14, US President Donald Trump held talks with Syria's interim leader Ahmed al-Sharaa in Riyadh, marking the first meeting between the leaders of the two countries in 25 years. The American leader announced that his country would begin lifting sanctions imposed on Damascus for decades during the rule of Hafez Assad and his son Bashar.
