Ukrainian couple detained at Romanian border with $1.4 million

The money was hidden in their clothes

The Romanian border police detained a Ukrainian couple with $1.4 million hidden under their clothes while trying to enter the country through the Siret checkpoint, the agency's press service reported.

“During a detailed search, conducted on the basis of reasonable suspicion, $810,000 was found on the man and $590,000 on the woman, hidden on their bodies under their clothes“, the statement said.

None of the amounts were declared in accordance with the current legislation on the import of foreign currency or national coins into the country. According to Romanian law, importing amounts exceeding EUR 10,000 (or the equivalent in another currency) without declaration is prohibited.

The entire amount was confiscated, and each of those detained was fined USD 3,000 by the Siret customs office. Violations of currency laws in Romania are subject to fines and confiscation of undeclared funds.
