Tehran has sent a warning to the authorities in Qatar that in the event of US military intervention in the Israeli operation against Iran, the country will strike US bases in the region. This is reported by The Washington Post, citing European diplomats.
Among the potential targets is the largest US air base in the Middle East - Al Udeid, located near the Qatari capital. The base serves as a forward command center for the U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM) and is home to up to 10,000 U.S. troops.
According to the publication, in the event of an escalation, Iran could target other U.S. bases in the Middle East, as well as U.S. diplomatic missions in the region. There is also a risk that attacks could be carried out by Iranian-backed radical Islamist militias.
When asked by The Washington Post for comment on the protective measures taken, the Pentagon referred to a statement by U.S. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth, which mentioned “deploying additional capabilities” in the region to prevent possible attacks.
Earlier, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Qatar announced that the country's emir, Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, had received a letter from the president of Iran, without disclosing its contents.
On June 13, Israel launched Operation Rising Lion, targeting Iran's nuclear program. Less than 24 hours later, Tehran responded with a retaliatory attack. In the following days, the two sides exchanged blows, with both Israel and Iran confirming casualties and damage, although on a limited scale.
