US President Donald Trump will push NATO member states to increase their defense spending to 5% of gross domestic product (GDP). This was stated by White House spokeswoman Caroline Levitt, quoted by Reuters, a day before the upcoming NATO summit, BTA reports.
“One of the main topics of discussion will be precisely this 5% threshold that our NATO allies must reach. President Trump has long called on our partners to make a greater commitment to common defense“, Levitt emphasized in an interview with Fox News.
According to her, during his first term, Trump has put pressure on allies to increase their military budgets. "You will hear the president talk about this very thing during this historic trip to Europe," she added.
