Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Sergei Ryabkov said in an interview published in today's issue of the Izvestia newspaper that he currently sees little chance of reviving the 2015 agreement, known as the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), to curb Iran's nuclear program, Reuters reported, quoted by BTA.
Ryabkov made his comments to the Russian newspaper before US President Donald Trump announced a ceasefire agreement between Iran and Israel after more than a week of air strikes between Israel and Iran. The Russian Deputy Foreign Minister, however, was speaking after airstrikes on Iranian nuclear sites by the United States, which announced that they had "completely and completely destroyed" Iran's key uranium enrichment facilities.
"At the moment, I see no conditions for restoring (the deal with Iran - ed. note)", Ryabkov told the "Izvestia" newspaper, referring to the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action.
"But this does not mean abandoning diplomacy, quite the opposite. Now is the time to redouble our efforts to reach some solutions that would help stabilize the situation," he added.
Ryabkov also said that Russia "understands the logic and arguments of our friends in Tehran, and, of course, this means an end to the strikes and a halt to further escalation from the other side."
"This is a clear prerequisite for our Iranian colleagues to consider their political and diplomatic options," the Russian deputy foreign minister said.
Russia has condemned Israel's strikes on sites in Iran, and Russian President Vladimir Putin said yesterday that the "unjustified" US attacks on Iranian nuclear facilities are pushing the world into great danger.
