Magnitude 5.5 quake hits Japan

Tremors of standing intensity recorded near Tokara archipelago

A magnitude 5.5 earthquake has been recorded on the remote southwestern Japanese island of Akuseki, the national meteorological agency reported, quoted by Reuters, BTA reports.

The quake struck at a depth of 20 kilometers off the coast of the Tokara archipelago in Kagoshima prefecture, about 1,200 kilometers south of Tokyo.

No tsunami warning was issued. According to the agency, the intensity of the earthquake was classified as "difficult to stand on."

Seismologists say that between June 21 and today, more than 1,000 tremors have been recorded around the archipelago.
