US congressmen must pass new sanctions law against Russia after the European Union approved its 18th and toughest sanctions package to date.

This call was made on the social network "Ex" by Lithuanian Foreign Minister Kestutis Budris, Ukrinform reported, BTA reported.

"The EU has paved the way. Now is the time for the perfect storm – the US Senate should vote on this sanctions law against Russia, creating an unbearable burden on the Russian economy and those who fuel Russian military aggression," Budris said.

He stressed that Russia "cannot ignore" the latest EU sanctions that are "targeted at the heart of the military economy".

According to the minister, the new sanctions targeting more than 100 ships of the Russian "shadow fleet", 22 Russian banks, including a ban on "Nord Stream" 1 and 2 and a reduction in the price ceiling for Russian oil, "guarantee that Russia is embarking on the path of running out of blood money".

"Peace through strength", Budris added.

The European Union today approved its 18th package of sanctions against the Russian Federation, described as one of the strictest to date, Ukrinform reports.
