Brazil has managed to reduce its dependence on the United States and build strong economic ties with most countries in the world. This will allow the country to avoid an economic crisis due to US tariffs on Brazilian products, said the head of state Lula da Silva.
“Today, Brazil is not as dependent on the United States as it was before. Brazil already has very broad trade relations with the whole world. From an economic point of view, we have many more opportunities“, quotes the local portal Brasil247.
According to the president, Brazil understands the value of relations with the United States, but at the same time does not intend to give in to the American administration on issues that could affect national sovereignty. Thus, the leader emphasized, Washington's threats will not force the Brazilian leadership to abandon the search for alternative payment instruments with BRICS partners.
“I will not abandon my belief in the need to create an alternative currency so that we can trade with other countries“, said Lula da Silva.
Earlier, the White House imposed tariffs on a number of Brazilian goods in the amount of 50%. The Brazilian president promised to respond in kind to the US measures, but later expressed hope that the country's delegation, led by Vice President Geraldo Alkmin, would be able to negotiate a revision of the tariffs.
