Former Romanian presidential candidate Calin Georgescu appeared today at the General Prosecutor's Office in Bucharest in connection with an investigation into actions against the constitutional order. He is being investigated for complicity with a group of mercenaries led by former member of the French Foreign Legion Horacio Potra, the Agerpress agency reported, BTA reports.

According to information from judicial sources, Georgescu was summoned to be informed of a change in the charges against him, from “participation“ in an attempt to violate constitutional order to “complicity“ in this crime. The change comes after interrogations on Friday of 18 members of Potra's group.

Dozens of Georgescu's supporters gathered outside the prosecutor's office, where a heavy gendarmerie presence was deployed.

Prosecutors say Potra and his mercenaries planned to infiltrate street protests following the annulment of the first round of last November's presidential election and cause chaos. The operation was discussed at a secret meeting on a farm outside Bucharest, the prosecution said, immediately after the annulment of the November 24 vote - the first round won by the then-little-known Georgescu.

Georgescu is also on trial in another case, in which he is accused of publicly promoting the cult of figures convicted of genocide, war crimes and crimes against humanity. In this case, he is also accused of spreading fascist, legionnaire, racist and xenophobic ideas.
