Floods kill at least seven people in northern Pakistan

The victims are volunteers who were working to restore a water channel in a mountain valley in Kashmir

At least 7 people died yesterday as a result of floods in northern Pakistan, DPA reported, quoted by BTA, citing an official Pakistani representative.

The agency notes that this is the latest disaster to hit the Himalayan region amid the growing effects of climate change.

The victims are volunteers who were working to restore a water channel in a mountain valley in the Gilgit-Baltistan administered territory in the geographical region of Kashmir, when the rising waters hit the area after a glacial lake overflowed, local rescue services reported.

According to rescuers, at least 6 more people were injured and taken to hospital.

The floods have blocked and highway linking Pakistan with neighboring China, cutting off access to several mountain villages, local authorities said.

Floods and frequent monsoon rains in Pakistan have killed about 312 people since late June. Last month, at least 20 people, most of them tourists, were swept away by floods in the same region, a regional government spokesman said.

Pakistan's northern region, home to at least five peaks over 8,000 meters (26,000 feet), has been hit by more frequent disasters in recent years due to climate change, including floods and the overflowing of glacial lakes.
