The eruption of Mount Merapi was recorded on the Indonesian island of Sumatra (West Sumatra province), the Indonesian Center for Volcanology and Geological Disaster Mitigation said in a statement.
According to its data, the ash rose to a height of 1,000 meters above the volcano's crater, or 3,891 meters above sea level. It is noted that the ash is spreading eastward. The agency urged locals and tourists to be careful and not approach the crater within a radius of 3 km, as well as to use masks and respirators to protect their respiratory tract from volcanic smoke and ash.
Merapi is an active volcano at 2,891 m above sea level, located at the northwestern end of the Barisan mountain range in the western part of the republic. In December 2023, at least 22 people died as a result of the eruption of Merapi.
The largest Indonesian archipelago in the world, consisting of 18,000 islands, is located in the so-called Pacific Ring of Fire, which makes the region susceptible to strong seismic activity. There are more than 500 volcanoes in Indonesia, of which about 130 are active.
