Vasil Terziev: 16 new kindergartens and 3 independent nurseries are being built in different areas of the city - 1

Finding a place for your child in a kindergarten should not be a test.

We know how much anxiety and uncertainty this process brings to thousands of families in Sofia.

That's why caring for the youngest is among the priorities in which we put the most consistency, effort and long-term thinking.

In 2025, we made important steps forward – not only in terms of the pace of construction, but also in terms of understanding the reasons that have kept the system in shortage for years.

We have completed 11 new kindergarten buildings, another 19 are under construction, and we are already preparing projects for an additional 12 where the need is most acute.

This was posted on his Facebook page by the mayor of Sofia, Vasil Terziev. Here is more from his post:

This year alone, we have opened 1,464 new places and reduced the shortage by over 15%.

For the first two years of the mandate, the total number of places added is nearly 2,500.

This is real progress – enough to inspire confidence, but also a clear sign that our work is far from over.

Currently, 16 new kindergartens and 3 independent nurseries are being built in different areas of the city, which will open 58 new groups in 2026-2027.

Some of them are modern, energy-efficient buildings in “Obelya 1“, “Druzhba“ and other neighborhoods – designed with the security, comfort and everyday life of children and teams in mind.

But we know clearly – construction alone does not solve the problem.

That is why we are also working on the entire system – the inclusion of nurseries in the educational network, the creation of the profession of “early childhood development specialist“, the “Learning Together“ programs that support parents and prepare future educators.

In January, we will present the overall strategy for early childhood development – what it looks like in the long term and how it builds on construction with sustainable solutions for people, processes and the quality of care.

A strategy that looks at the kindergarten not just as a building, but as part of a working, humane and fair system.

We are not yet where we want to be.

But every step has been taken with the clear conviction that childcare is not an expense, but the smartest investment of money in our future.
